The White House Rolls On with an Egg~citing Easter Tradition

 

This morning the South Lawn of the White House welcomed 50,000 guests to celebrate an egg-cellent Easter-Egg Roll.    Before the Egg-citing day of family-friendly activities began President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and the Easter Bunny appeared from the Blue Room balcony to greet guests then they mingled with bunny-fans of all ages around the lawn.

There was something fun for everyone to do.

Picnic tables were set up as Military Card writing and crayon-coloring stations.

There were Egg-rolling and Ring-tossing contests.

And, there was even a cozy South Lawn reading-nook where The First Lady read “The Runaway Bunny“. The tale is a heartfelt story of unconditional mom & bunny love that’s been a childhood classic since 1942.

The first celebration of Easter Egg Rolling at the White House was an 1878 brain-storm of President Rutherford B. Hayes.  In defiance of Congress banning kids from rolling Easter eggs around Capitol grounds the President invited families to play egg-croquet and roll Easter eggs around the White House lawn!

Since that time many Presidents have added charming touches to the tradition. In 1889 President Harrison invited the United States Marine Band to play music while kids played on the lawn.

In 1969 First Lady Pat Nixon asked the Easter Bunny to join kids at the Easter Monday party. President and Mrs. Reagan added wooden Easter Egg keepsakes to the traditional egg-roll.

And, in 2009, President Obama initiated free, on-line, lottery ticket applications so kids from around the country would feel welcome to join White House Easter Party fun.

Applications for next year’s White House Easter Monday Egg Roll will be available via the RECREATION.GOV. site. The window opens in late February 2027 and closes in early March 2027.  ( Dates for 2027 are TBD)
