International Tennis Hall of Fame: Newport Rhode Island. Courting Style Fashion Exhibit
19th Century Victorians set the ‘all-white’ fashion trend for tennis players. They thought colorless fabric would mask immodest signs of sweat during a match.
The social custom became a court ruling on Wimbledon’s grass in 1963. From then on only the tiniest touch of colored trim has been allowed on the courts of the All England Club.
Players found creative ways to customized the uniformed look. And fabrics evolved to manage the realities of perspiration. But, to this day some private clubs continue to honor the sport’s historic signature style. The ‘always-white, always-right’ dress code is timeless, ageless and in it’s own way, makes a power-play statement.

Styles of rule-makers and risk-takers are permanent features of a fun fashion exhibit at the International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHOF) in Newport, Rhode Island. From flashy to trashy, “Courting Fashion” landmarks the glad rags of champions from around the world.

The ongoing review of tennis’ passion for fashion Is one of many exhibits inside the tennis cathedral. This month the ITHOF is also preparing to recognize Roger Federer and Mary Carillo for their legendary contributions to the sport. And your invited to share the fun of a multi-day extravaganza.
On Friday 8/28/26 Rodger Federer is set to play in a Celebrity Pro Classic doubles match on Newport’s famed grass court.

On Saturday, August 29th, 2026 at 6:30 PM The International Tennis Hall of Fame formally celebrates Roger Federer, 20 time major champion and Mary Carillo, acclaimed sports broadcaster.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on the Tennis Channel.
A Red-Carpet Pre-Show & Watch Party with fan Q & A’s precedes the event.
