“Isamu Noguchi : I Am Not a Designer” is the latest exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum. Noguchi insisted he wasn’t a designer and yet, Salem’s jewel boxed galleries are filled with evidence to the contrary!

Designed for Phillip Lippincotte Goodwin, (1885-1958) co-founder of MOMA, Noguchi’s inspiration for this console table is derivative of coastal rock formations in Japan
Noguchi’s post-war, mid-century creations are examples of an evolving modern aesthetic. With his minimalist-to-the-max designs Noguchi shaped our culture. The forms are simple and ~ simply sexy.

Strolling PEM’s galleries guests may feel the artist’s architectural dialogue integrates everything from domestic spaces to urban places. That was his intention. Noguchi’s vibe is atmospheric. If there’s one word for his creations it could be ~ flow.

Believing ‘art should shape spaces where people live, gather and interact’ Noguchi’s philosophy infused his designs with sensual form. His collective thoughts are reiterations of natural connectivity and they continue to imprint our days in some over-looked ways.

So timeless are the lines of Noguchi’s works his style informed another genius of design, Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs. Apple products are pop-culture cousins of the Sensei’s philosophy. There’s a similar quality to their understated sensuality.
Experience the artistry of Isamu Noguchi at PEM now through January 3,2027 and you’re sure to think of Steve Jobs ~ as you grab for your camera, that’s your also your phone and e-mail. The flow knows!
