Dr.Laura Landerman Garber : Founder : Holiday Card Challenge
This week our Nation pauses to honor our Vets. On Veteran’s Day it’s customary to observe a moment of silence during parades, gravesite ceremonies and classroom announcements.
If however, Dr. Laura Landerman-Garber has her way, in some way, every-day will be Veteran’s Day. And she’s not talking about a ceremonial moment of silence. She’s loud and proud and on a mission.
Deploying a charm-offensive everywhere she roams, the psychologist with a heart of gold aspires to enlist everyone she meets to honor a service-member with a note of encouragement, gratitude or holiday greeting.

Her campaign began 20 years ago, most unexpectedly. While retrieving tableware for her Thanksgiving dinner Dr. Landerman-Garber found a stash of unused greeting cards. The find inspired her to set the table with the intention of asking her guests to grab a card and write a note to a Veteran. She said it wasn’t necessarily extortion, but without a handwritten note ~ there’d be no turkey! Dr. Laura considers herself on ‘active-duty’.
Post-feast she sent the cards to a small group of heroes.
Since that serendipitous brain-storm the doctor’s ambition to reach out to Vets has been matched by momentum. Support from government officials, (including the White House), private industries, and citizens who’ve heard of this good-deed on CBS and ABC News have joined her ranks. To date, the campaign that started at her Thanksgiving table in New Hampshire has delivered 1,500,000 cards to military folks around the world.
Now, Dr. Laura is asking for your help. She’s challenging you and yours to join her writing initiative by sending a non-political note to a Vet. After it’s written, send it to her, she and her squadron of volunteers handle the distribution to combat zones, navel carriers and posts across the globe.
