Newly restored ‘East India Marine Hall’ anchors Salem’s past to present sensibilities

If your bucket-list brims with dreams of exploring exotic ports-of-call, but the thought of air travel makes you woozy, set sail for Salem’s newly restored East India Marine Hall.  Any mariner worth her salt will tell you, Latitude 42N, and longitude 70W coordinates past with present adventures in a very cool way.

The core of East India Marine Hall’s swashbuckling collection is a virtual treasure-chest of curiosities.

If jaw bones could talk this one would share tales of whales.

Grasses of fashion would speak of swishing though seasons in the East.

And, coral ‘cups’, large enough to toast Neptune himself, would boast of bounties under Caribbean seas.

These “Art-is-Fact” installations weave natural history into East India Marine Hall’s map of humanities. Relevant as compass points such curiosities help us navigate America’s fluid history of pride and prejudice.

The 1st significant collection of Figurehead from 19th Century merchant ships

Appropriate for all ages, East India Marine’ Hall’s special gallery can be taken at face-value or launch thought provoking debates.  Like Figureheads that watched over sea-faring voyagers the power of this eclectic installation bears witness to treasures worthy of National recognition and acknowledges the reality of our willingness to adopt manifestations of social injustice into ‘the new world’.
