
It’s FAT TUESDAY! AKA Mardi Gras, the last day of indulgence before Lent begins tomorrow.
In New Orleans it’s tradition to eat King Cakes in advance of the season of sacrifice. The pastry is typically made of brioche dough infused with cinnamon, glazed with frosting and dusted with tri-colored sugars. Purple, green and gold are the signature shades of the day.
After the cake is baked a toy baby is placed inside the confection. Legend has it the person who finds the trinket in their slice of cake will be blessed with good luck and prosperity.

Ordering takes too much time, and finding a King cake today may be challenging. So, “She’s” got a grocery-store hack for you to consider. A Queen Cake is just as tasty, colorful and very-ready to help “les bon temps roll-on”
Most grocery store dairy cases sell Pillsbury’s “Cinnabon” styled rolls. Each pop-can holds five Queen-sized spirals of soft dough heavily swirled with sugar and cinnamon. Hacking into the secret of the dough-boy takes you to Mardi Gras level decadence in less than 30 minutes.

The semi-homemade can of pillowy sweetness includes a little sleeve of frosting that can be ‘Queen’ed” up by whipping it into a 1/2 brick of cream cheese, 1/2 stick of butter a 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of milk and a big-ole dash of vanilla extract.
Once the cinnamon-y swirls cool, add a good luck trinket to the bottom of the buns then crown your Queen of cakes with extra frosty gooeyness. Sprinkling the Queen’s buns with edible glitter in your favorite color adds your personality to her sparkle.

Pour yourself a cup of coffee, hack into these buns and rock-out with “Iko, Iko jock-a-mo-fee na ne: ” a favorite New Orleans song to get into the spirit of Les Bon Temps.
