Worlds will soon be colliding, at least in a cosmic sense, at the Morgan Library and Museum.
From June 26th-October 4th, 2026, “Tarot! Renaissance Symbols, Modern Visions ” will be a blockbuster event of the season. Making a mark in Mid-town Manhattan spirits of the Renaissance and modern mysticism will mingle with music and magic at The Morgan till Fall.
Presented in two parts, this double-gallery exhibition explores the origins of Tarot Cards in Italy and how adaptations of the wildly popular card game remain relevant today.
The exhibit begins with “Renaissance Symbols”. Three decks of fifteenth century Tarot cards illustrate symbols of courtly life-stylings in Italy from 1456-58. Originally conceived as a game of skill, a round of cards, or ‘Tarot trick’ included allegorical figures of Love, Death, Fortune,Time and Folly.
These rare cards were commissioned as a wedding gift commemorating the marriage of two powerful families from Milan. The cards were purchased in 1911 by J.P. Morgan.

‘Modern Visions” transitions from virtuous Renaissance card games into contemporary riffs on Tarot card spiritualism. Inspired by the sensations of being connected to another place, abstract, sometimes surreal aesthetics translate fates~with a wink from the occult.
